F1 cars cannot reverse under race conditions, but they are equipped with reversing gear for use during pit stops. This is because the cars are designed to be as light as possible, and the extra weight of a reverse gear would negatively impact performance. However, the drivers are still able to back up their cars by using the engine braking system.
