High cholesterol is often caused by a diet high in saturated and trans fats. These unhealthy fats can increase your LDL (bad) cholesterol levels and lower your HDL (good) cholesterol levels. Over time, this can lead to plaque buildup in your arteries, putting you at risk for heart disease and stroke. A few other things that can raise your cholesterol levels include:
-smoking
-being overweight or obese
-having diabetes
-having a family history of high cholesterol
If you’re concerned about your cholesterol levels, talk to your doctor. They can help you develop a plan to lower your cholesterol and reduce your risk of developing heart disease.
